I Cracked the Code on My Dream Writing Career. It was Messy. I Wanted to Quit.
When I was 17, I worked at a small local bookstore in Lafayette, NJ.
My job was to stand behind the register and ring up book purchases.
While people were browsing, I'd read books and write book reviews.
I can still remember how proud I was when the people walked by and read my review on 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser.
It wasn't long after writing that review that I leaned heavily into psychology as a genre.
Why are people the way they are?
What is the basis of true transformation?
I took creative writing with a professor from Princeton (I wish I had the paper he gave me an A on 'cause I did cry).
I drove an hour away at 6 p.m. to catch a class with a legendary psych professor.
The next thing you know I was fully immersed in maternal health, the history of obstetrics, and holistic women's health.
This morning I'm sitting here with 8+ writing projects on my desk and I'm smiling my face off.
I cracked the code on my dream.
It was messy.
I wanted to quit.
People close to me told me to quit.
I failed a lot.
But I stayed in the game and I did it.
Is work really work when it's what you'd be doing anyway?
Big Love,
